Animated in the style of a retro 16-bit video game, JUMPY tells the story of an in-game avatar who refuses to give up. Being a gamer since the age of two, video games have always been a part of my life. When I was feeling frustrated with career stagnation, I felt the maddening experience of playing an unbeatable video game was the perfect story metaphor. However, I wasn’t prepared for what JUMPY would become. Punctuated by Luminist’s beautiful score (written in just 2 days, by the way) Jumpy’s determination and hope resonated with people beyond my wildest hopes. Adolescence is tough. Created and pitched as an animated series proof-of-concept, the animatic above wasn’t picked up for a series (yet), but was widely praised and drew comparisons to the multi-million dollar IP you might have heard of called “Spongebob Squarepants.” Brought to life by the one-of-a-kind voice talent of Missy Mannila, Lex is an icon of teenage anxiety, nervousness, energy, and hope… as a dinosaur. Through her eyes, the most ordinary moment can become a magical adventure. However when her visions become too distracting, she decides to have her imagination removed. Afterwards, her life is changed forever… but for the better? I can’t understate how pivotal BLURRY was in my life. Being my first experiment in self-taught animation with no prior training, I had no clue what I was doing. Drawn with pen and paper, painted in Photoshop with a mouse, and animated in Premiere… production all but fried my macbook at the time. The animation is extremely rough, but it didn’t seem to matter because the response was overwhelming. No two people seem to interpret the film the same way, but everyone who sees it is moved. I can’t imagine a better result as a storyteller. After joining the team as an animator, I quickly began writing and directing content as Director of Animation. I’ve worked on nearly all parts of the experience in some way, including narrative curriculum lessons, game design, marketing and branding. My proudest achievement at AdaptedMind is the SOCIAL STUDIES curriculum, which I developed, wrote and directed. Running for two seasons, my amazing team brought to life the adventures of Ruby and Augie, two inquisitive monster children who travel back in time to learn about history. I, however, did not do that exactly. Instead, I wrote a script for the “The Andy Griffith Show” injecting the classic, wholesome show with a more biting edge. In my episode “MAYBERRY LIVES MATTER,” an unarmed black man is shot and murdered by Barney Fife. And while the ever-moral Sheriff Andy Griffith knows Barney to be guilty, he’s celebrated by the rest of the town. Will Andy tell the truth and be the hero Mayberry needs?
